Second Station: Jesus takes up the cross

Second Station: Jesus takes up the crossAs Jesus takes up his cross it is really our cross that he is carrying. In the world today the effects of climate change are mostly caused by people in the more affluent parts of the world. The cross of flooding, disease, homelessness and even death itself falls on the most vulnerable in the developing parts of our planet. We can acknowlege this as we see where we stand in relation to images of affliction or of affluence.

  • Do I turn away from the news of suffering, drought and destruction and find comfort in advertisments for cars, flights and food?
  • Do I avoid Christ when I avoid the cross?
Lord, you took on our troubles, our sins and carried them to Calvary. Your sacrifice was not in vain. Each time I participate in the Eucharist may I become more resolved to help others carry their crosses in life. May I do my best to ensure that my thoughtlessness and extravagance does not add a further burden to the already troubled lives of our brothers and sisters.
